Many women find that pelvic floor exercises that do not involve working the pelvic floor muscles against resistance are about as useful as tits on a bull.

Successful pelvic floor exercise always involves working the pelvic floor muscles against resistance. It is possibly the greatest insult to a woman’s intelligence to teach pelvic floor exercises by squeezing against nothing.

If you told a man to flex his arm up and down a couple of hundred times a day and he would build muscle in it he would probably laugh at you knowing that you need to work the muscle against resistance to achieve this.

 

The principle with the pelvic floor muscle is the same.  You must work the muscle against resistance for pelvic floor exercise to be effective.  Yet women are still being instructed to squeeze against nothing, and often by health professionals, or women who should know better.

Pelvic floor exercises without using resistance have been taught for decades. The result of practicing pelvic floor exercises without using resistance is appalling; women queuing for appointments to see specialists, lining up for surgeries that could so easily have been prevented, their lives made a misery through incontinence or prolapse,

 

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists estimate that 1 in 3 women will suffer a problem of incontinence in their lifetime.
